Restaurant Review: Gunther’s Ice Cream

Here in Sacramento, there are variety of amazing restaurants serving food of all ethnicities. Not to mention the delicious seafood and pizza. But let’s think past the appetizers and entrees that these restaurants and diners provide. I’m skipping right to dessert. I believe that everyone needs a little bit of sweetness after a good meal or even just to satisfy that craving. And what better way to do that then with a nice scoop of ice cream? Specifically, Gunther’s.

Gunther’s Ice Cream has been voted the third best local ice cream parlor in Sacramento behind the Smoosh Ice Cream Sandwich Factory and Leatherby’s Family Creamery. Gunther’s is largely known for it’s history and stability. Established in April 1940, the parlor was owned and operated by Herman “Pop” Gunther and his wife, Iva.  It is Sacramento’s oldest ice cream parlour and is widely considered a Sacramento landmark. Popular for using only the finest ingredients, Gunther’s provides customers with more than 40 different and tasty flavors (my favorite being the chocolate chip cookie dough, of course). And not only that, they also make and sell yogurt, sherbet, ice cream with no sugar added, and much more.

As soon as I walked into the parlor, I understood why and how Gunther’s was so popular. It has a welcoming feel and ambience to it, and I could understand why it’s always so crowded. The decor is old fashioned and relaxed and the employees seem happy to serve you.

For my first tasting, I decided to try Gunther’s flavor of the month: carrot cake. At first I was a tad skeptical because I didn’t really understand how the flavor would taste in ice cream. But I tried it with an open heart and mind and actually… liked it. It definitely wasn’t as bad as I thought it would taste but it probably won’t be my new favorite ice cream flavor. Out of five stars, I would give that flavor a three.

Last but not least, I decided to try one of my all time favorite flavors, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. This star rating was definitely a five. The ice cream had an actual authentic feel to it and actually tasted like cookie dough.   The chocolate chips that we’re found in almost every bite. This is for sure my new Gunther’s favorite. 

Overall, Gunther’s has been an amazing experience and very enjoyable. This ice cream parlor has been successful for 77 years, and I personally feel it can be successful and last for many more years. I understand why most customers walk out satisfied and are eager for their next visit. I would recommend the parlor to many other ice cream lovers.
