Tis the Season of good food and comfort,
The beginning of the school year is like a honeymoon period that lasts all through September and even October. This is when days are long and sunny, everything is lively and things are really happening.
By November 1, it’s pretty much wraps.
Things start going downhill left and right, and all of the sudden it’s getting dark by 5 p.m.? And now you have three exams next week and an hour of homework to do tonight? It’s only 4:30 but it feels like 8. Nights are nothing but dark and cold. Don’t we live in California? WHY IS IT SO COLD?!
It’s hard to find joy in such a lifeless season, but it's a different type of elation that November offers. Some might call it a filler month that kind of awkwardly sits between October and December, but it’s much more than that. It is the epitome of the Fall season. All that November has to offer perfectly embodies this. From the weather, to film, to songs, to food, decor, and style, Fall is in the air!
FILMS
Have you ever noticed people who love Fall always have some sort of uneasiness to them? Like sickly in a good, comforting way? Almost like the feeling "Coraline" gave you when you watched it for the first time? That’s how I categorize films to be “Fall movies”.
I watched a clay animation film the other day called “Memoirs of a Snail,” and I felt it perfectly embodied this feeling. A depressing and raw, but weirdly comforting film that puts you through every stage of grief then makes you ugly cry by the end. Feel-good movies like these are the BEST to watch this season. They warm you up like a big hug to help combat the freezing weather.
A few of my other favorites include “Riding in Cars with Boys,” “The Notebook,” “Girl Interrupted,” “The Joy Luck Club,” “All the Light We Cannot See,” and “Uptown Girls.” Aside from being great movies to watch at any time, they hit especially hard snuggled up on a gloomy day (preferably a rainy one).
I highly advise you to watch at least one of these films this break topped with a nice big cup of hot chocolate, a warm blanket, and loved ones.
Or Ramen -- Mmmm... I want some Ramen.
FOOD
Speaking of warm beverages and soups, TIS THE SEASON OF BIG-BACKERY! Staying warm and cozy this holiday season requires that we keep our stomachs nice and full of warm goodness as well.
All types of soup are perfect for this, but noodle soups like Ramen and pho seem to be the most comforting. Best believe I’m gonna be hovering over all the soup at Thanksgiving this year!
Festive little drinky-drinks are also a key component of Fall. Pumpkin spice lattes, chai lattes, caramel ribbon frappuccinos, MATCHA EVERYTHING and all the other festive Starbucks/Dutch Bros drinks just suit the season so well. Yet of course, warm beverages like hot chocolate, tea, or champurrado are most ideal for the weather and provide the same warmth and relief as soups.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THANKSGIVING FAVORITES! Whether or not you celebrate the holiday, what is there not to love about some good Turkey Day comfort food?
Mashed potatoes and gravy, mac-and-cheese, rolls, stuffing, FLAN, pumpkin pie, candied yams, TURKEY of course, HAM, AND A WHOLE LOTTA RICE, and many others. I think everyone can admit Thanksgiving is really just an excuse to eat a lot of good food… and the leftovers for the next 2 weeks.
WEATHER
RAINY DAYS ARE THE BESTTT! There's something about California rain that has such a distinct scent. It smells like all sorts of greenery and makes days feel 10x cozier. Rainy weather is the ideal Fall weather and makes for the perfect indoor activities, such as:
Going on a movie MARATHON
Playing video games or board games
Building a Lego set or solving a puzzle
READING!
Binge-watching whole TV shows
Painting, drawing, or making some other form of art
Having a fashion show with your friends
Building a fort
Working out
Staring outside the window and pondering
Dancing in the rain to have a dramatic moment (you might get sick)
EATING SOUP OR DRINKING HOT COCO!
SLEEPING!
This list doesn’t even fully cover the amount of possibilities a rainy day has so now you have no excuse to be bored at home on a rainy day this break.
FASHION
Yes, of course I had to include a section about Fall fashion in this article because it’s not my article without some sort of cutesy vision board of some sort. Fall fashion goes by many names online, like Christian Girl Autumn or 2016 Ariana Grande Core, depending on what you’re going for.
The main characteristics of Fall fashion are really just a whole bunch of sweaters, leggings, jeans, skirts, bodysuits, tights, coats, Doc Martens and UGGS. Other, more trendy accessories also include: leg warmers, earmuffs, stanelys or some other festive drink, and lots of lace and BOWS. A vision board incorporating this aesthetic is of course provided below.
THAT IS ALL! ENJOY YOUR BREAK GUYS AND BE SURE TO KEEP YOUR DAYS FULL OF FALL FUN, COMFORT, AND LOTS OF WARM FOODS!
HAPPY TURKEY DAY<3
