Fashion trends are ever changing in our fast-moving generation and 2024 has definitely been a rollercoaster of new styles, textures and accessories for us. Layering, mismatching, and accessorizing in unique ways have seemed to be the highlight of this year.
And of course, themes of 90’s and early 2000’s to even 2010’s fashion are also heavily evident in many of these trends (as they’ve been for the past couple of years).
Thus, I would like to reminisce on a few trends that stuck out the most.
JEWELRY
Chunky/statement jewelry has been a HUGE component of 2024 fashion in all sorts of forms. They're especially noticeable decorating a plain-ish outfit through chunky earrings, bangles, rings, arm cuffs or even bold belt buckles. There are many silver versions of this, but I find the gold “chunky jewelry” to be much more appealing and popular.
Abundant jewelry on top of all of the “chunky jewelry” has also shown to be a huge accessorizing trend for this year. This typically looks like tons of layered necklaces/chains, hair cuffs, gold/silver claw clips and hair pins, chain belts, more rings, more bracelets, multiple earrings, every sort of piercing possible, and more. This jewelry styling technique can easily elevate any plain old outfit into a trendy fashion statement.
HAIR
Hair trends have also taken our generation by storm this year. Bleaching and hair dye, highlights, brown cherry red, soft ginger, midnight black and buttery blonde have dominated the salons this year and looked good doing it. The layered face-framing curtain bang haircut has remained the most popular cut of 2024, with a rise of bobs, micro bangs, side bangs, and birkin bangs as well. On the shorter side, mullets, “apple cuts”, and low taper cuts on the more masculine side have also been huge.
Hairstyling trends this year have ultimately been a mix of simplistic, “clean,” modern looks and unique, messy 90’s-/early 2000’s-inspired ones.
Slicked-back updos of all kinds, half-up-half-downs, double/bubble braids, ballerina buns, french twists, and other minimalist hairdos have pretty much embodied the “clean girl aesthetic” of this year.
THE baddie hairstyles this year were 90’s/2000’s hairstyles with key elements like zig-zag hairlines, tiny braids, twisted mini buns, slicked-back side parts, teasing, crimping, hair cuffs, colorful rubber bands, barrettes, and more. The iconic 90’s blowout has also been a huge sensation, while trends using socks and other overnight hair-roller alternatives have gone crazy viral online to create this look “effortlessly.”
MISC. ACCESSORIES
Designer and bayonetta glasses pretty much founded the whole “office siren” aesthetic trend this summer and have been found on most of the 2024 fashion girlies as a bold, stylish choice. Especially the red, black, brown, and clear ones with hints of gold and silver.
Headphones -- specifically Sony, Apple, and Beats headphones -- have weirdly enough become a pretty popular “accessory” this year over AirPods or earbuds. For a gym or airport outfit, this is a pretty trendy component for some reason. It’s cute tho, not that I'm complaining.
Over-decorated purses, bags, suitcases, backpacks, EVERYTHING have been one of my personal favorite trends this year. Perfectly and precisely decorated bags are just the perfect way to express yourself and your personality into something useful and cute. These include all sorts of unique keychains, pins, ribbons, bows, even photocards, claw clips, and more. Love love LOVE this trend.
Tights/stockings also dominated 2024 fashion through all sorts of colors, designs, and styles. The fashion girlies loved their red, black, and white tights this year, and incorporated them into all sorts of trendy outfits. Mini skirts/dresses, leg warmers, boots, heels and flats were most commonly paired with them and they ate every single time.
Tooth gems/grillz, which are also a little more on the jewlery side, have been a huge sensation this year. Pretty much anyone with a fashion sense and enough money bought some and they just look so clean and complimentary on everyone. Grillz have obviously been around for a while, but this year specifically new variations of them only on small bunches of teeth or single teeth have been trendy. Tooth gems are just genius and beautiful. That’s all I have to say on that.
Fur hats were also a pretty big trend this year specifically for our younger generation. Stylish and practical for the colder seasons, these hats are a little more on the alternative side but are still super popular. I personally think they look best with some matching fur boots or even a fur coat.
Now finally onto the actual 2024 CLOTHES trends…
MISC. CLOTHES
Jorts (jeans shorts) were a huge fashion phenomenon this year incorporated in all sorts of styles. Whether feminine, masculine, baggy, camo, khaki, or denim, they were literally everywhere during the warmer months of this year and they slayed on everyone.
Bubble skirts….they kind of resemble puffy toddler shorts and can sometimes be shorter than necessary. I personally hate these because they only look good on a select few of those who wear them, but again it really all depends on the quality of skirt and the outfit. The dress versions of these are a lot cuter, however, and are super trendy as well.
Low-rise bottoms have remained super popular this year in everything from low-rise jeans, sweatpants, leggings and more. Lots of rhinestones and flared bottoms as well. 70’s comeback slay!!!
Baggy jeans, sweats, and other baggy bottoms have also remained trendy this year as a definite comeback of 90’s/early 2000’s fashion. Paired quite nicely with a smaller shirt/crop top for that small top big bottoms type of look that has been everywhere this year.
Bodysuits have been a huge sensation for the baddies this year in all sorts of colors and outfit combinations. They’ve been THE highlight of the colder seasons to show off that sculpted bod.
CAMO PRINT. Oh my God, that one hoodie from Hollister had everyone in a chokehold at one point this year, and THOSE DAMN camo cargo pants. Aside from those though, all types of camo sweatshirts, zip-ups, sweatpants, and even sets were trendy as well.
CHEETAH/LEOPARD PRINT. I’m sure we all remember the glamour trend that happened not too long ago where everything with this print had a blondeeee glamourrr blond blond glamourr backtrack. However, cheetah/leopard print was popular even before that trend this year in all types of tops. This print looks SO GOOD with gold imo.
Lululemon/BBL jackets and sets were also seen on lots of people this year. They especially fueled the soccer mom and gym girl aesthetics. Whether real and extremely expensive or a dupe and probably almost as cute, they ate and sculpt the body very nicely. Good job BBL jackets.
SHOES
Coming in hot for probably the most popular shoes this year, ADIDAS SAMBAS! White, black, brown, red, rainbow, chartreuse, they’ve literally been everywhere in ALL the colors. I have had enough of them (I’m still bitter because I want some). Even my dad bought some this year. I haven’t seen that man wearing anything but Vans, Docs, or Converse since I was born. That says a lot.
Adidas had quite the year in 2024 actually as their Campuses and Superstars both skyrocketed in the fashion world as well. The Adidas campuses are quite literally the chunkier and furrier cousin of the Sambas but still super cute and I don’t own any myself so maybe I’m just bitter while the superstars really set us back a couple of years but in a good way. I remember everyone in 2017 was rocking these (including me this time) and they ate. They are chunkier and this makes sense with chunky shoes and baggy bottoms being pretty popular now.
New Balances! Yes, the grandma shoe! Just kidding, they are actually the perfect white/grey sneakers for everyday fits. Specifically the 530’s and the 550’s are the ones that I’ve seen around the most. Yassss!
UGGS!!! They’ve always been popular, but specific models have become staple comfort shoes this year. The Tasman Slippers, Classic Ulta Minis, Bailey Bow Boots II, Lowmel Sneakers, and pretty much all the other classic boot heights have been the most worn. You really can’t go wrong with a pair of Uggs; they match with everything.
Knu skool Vans….. the old skool Vans we all know and love but CHUNKY. That is the whole concept of this shoe. They were quite the fashion sensation in the summer/fall.
Birkenstock slippers have also become quite the staple comfort shoe this year, particularly for men. They’re simple and really flat and look very mature.
GOGO BOOTS!! THE 70’S COMEBACK I AM LIVINGGG FOR!! They just look so good for going-out outfits with mini skirts, skinny jeans, tights, long socks, dresses, short shorts and just about everything else. I’m not really the demographic for these boots yet because, you know, I’m not of-age and don’t go clubbing yet -- but I’ve seen them ALL OVER social media on all the grown baddies and I can’t wait to be just like them. Oh yeah, Sabrina Carpenter is a well known fan of these -- as well as many other pop stars who’ve blown up this year. Very Mamma Mia of them!!
Happy Holidays, Kings and Queens and Monarchs!!
