On Friday April 17, 2026, Kennedy hosted their very first “Hmong Night” hosted by Connie Vang with the help of the members of Hmong Club.
The hosts ensured that there were a variety of ways to represent Hmong culture. They chose to do this through Hmong techniques of dance, taekwondo and the food they served during intermission.
Connie Vang described Hmong Night as a student led so of course Hmong students hosted it, with help from the co-sponsorship from hip Hmong innovating politics”. She simply states the purpose of Hmong Night was for her and her students to advertise and celebrate Hmong culture and its community moving forward.
Hmong Club member, Makayla Lee, states that the main purpose of Hmong Night is to honor their culture.
“The purpose of Hmong Night is to honor our roots,” Lee said. “And nurture our future.”
She mentions that at Hmong Night, Hmong Club provided display tables that “will highlight our heritage such as performance, such as our colors.”
On Friday April 17, Hmong Club’s first dance performance of the night in the big gym, embracing the beauty of their culture.
Previously, Hmong Club hosted a spirit week for Hmong culture. Shrewdly Moua explained that the reason for Hmong Spirit Week was to allow students to openly present their cultures.
“It’s not really a well represented culture at Kennedy,” Moua stated. “I believe that they felt a lot of appreciation and just gratefulness towards the large expression and community of Hmong youth.”
Hmong Club made sure to have a big audience, so as to spread more knowledge of Hmong culture and to bring Hmong community together.
Many individuals and young people from different schools came to Kennedy in attendance of Hmong Night.
It is planned that more Hmong Nights are here to come in the future and to hopefully catch on as an annual event for future generations, continuing to teach others about Hmong background.
