In the past couple of months in Sacramento, complaints of mosquito bites have increased, becoming a major problem by leaving bites all over the human body.
According to the mosquito squad, the reason mosquitoes have been around lately is due to the combination of warm weather and the amount of water. There are also many different breeds of mosquitoes, causing it to seem like there are a lot of them.
There’s no method to a mosquito’s biting madness; they land and bite anywhere.
In the Sacramento – Yolo Mosquitos & Vector Control District research, they were able to identify the invasive species of mosquitoes present in the Sacramento area. They brought awareness to ensure the safety of the communities by intending to minimize the spread of mosquitoes.
One of many invasive-mosquitoes species is Aedes Aegypti, known as the Yellow Fever mosquito. They are mainly characterized by being dark mosquitoes with white patterns on their banded legs.
Another invasive-mosquitoes species is Aedes Albopictus, which is known as the Asian Tiger mosquito. It has a similar appearance to the yellow fever mosquito, being small, black, white stripes on its back and legs.
Unlike other native mosquito species that bite at dawn and dusk, the Yellow Fever and Asian Tiger mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters.
Having reproducing habits of laying eggs in small spaces of still water, such as flower pots, pet dishes, and discarded tires, the eggs can survive for months without water, hatching when water is introduced.
The majority of mosquitoes were at Kennedy around the auditorium, where there was a break in the pipe from the root of a tree, which was causing puddles in the quad. The still water attracted the mosquitoes, allowing them to reproduce on the puddles.

The Plant Manager, James Hernandez, explains the problem with the pipe.
“There was a broken pipe due to a root growing into it,” Henandez said. “It cracked. It was six feet down, and had to be done over the weekend because they had to shut all the water off.”
This extended the process of fixing the pipe, leaving more puddles all over the quad of more and more still water for the reproduction of mosquitoes. Hernandez gives
“That’s why it took longer because they had to come on the weekends, and then they had to let the stuff dry, and then they went back in there to check the water was not leaking.”
Having to take longer because if all the water was shut off, students wouldn’t be able to use restroom facilities or have any active running water, waiting til the weekend, when students aren’t on campus.
The mosquitoes have some disease risk, being able to transmit several diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and the Zika virus.
Research from the Cleveland Clinic suggests that the Zika virus is predominantly spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Although the virus is present, there hasn’t been much information about how many people have transmitted the disease.
According to Sacramento – Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District on October 30th, 2025, 2 am – 6 am, the whole pocket, Sacramento River to Interstate 5, was sprayed with Deltagard.
The insight from the Government of Manitoba provides information, regarding DeltaGard, of how it is an insecticide that provides fast, effective, economical control of all mosquito species and outperforms the competition at lower application rates.
Killing mosquitoes by direct contact, where the ingredient deltamethrin interferes with the normal functioning of the mosquito’s nervous system, leading to paralysis or death.
It was sprayed at times, such as at night or early mornings, because it is typically when mosquitoes are most active during those hours. This reduces the likelihood of harm to other animals, as they are typically inactive during these hours.
As the seasons begin to change to winter, there is a disappearance of mosquitoes that no longer need to worry about them.
