The Cougars Girls Basketball Team leaned on a physical defense, great shooting, and a clean late game finish to take down the Vacaville Wood Wildcats, 44-40, in a hard-fought non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Kennedy set the tone early with a physical brand of defense that smothered drives and forced Wood into tough looks. The Cougars mixed in efficient scoring both from deep and finishing through contact and getting good free throws, closing the first quarter up 10-7.
Their physicality was matched by Woods’ effort on the glass, as the Wildcats consistently battled for second-chance opportunities, but Kennedy’s early rhythm gave them control.
One of the cleanest highlights of the night came in the second quarter, when No.15, Emani Evans shook her defender with a crossover that sent the crowd buzzing before kicking it out to her teammate who buried a three. However, Woods’ rebounding kept them within striking distance, and the Cougars entered halftime ahead 26-21.
Kennedy’s defense continued to define the third quarter. Emani Evans delivered a momentum-swinging bloc and helped keep the tempo and energy on Kennedy’s side.

Even as Wood pushed back with strong inside presence, the Cougars maintained a 33-27 lead heading into the fourth.
The Wildcats made their biggest charge late, closing the gap behind second-chance points and steady interior scoring. However, every time Wood threatened, Kennedy had an answer. That answer was Number 1, Nielah Cornelius.
Cornelius scored consistently throughout the night, shooting consistently, knocking down free throws, and keeping Kennedy’s offense afloat when the game tightened. With seconds remaining and the Cougars clinging to a narrow lead, she stepped to the line and calmly sank a clutch free throw that pushed the margin to four which effectively sealed the win.
Wood continued to fight until the final whistle, but Kennedy’s blend of tough defense, timely shot-making, and poise under pressure proved too much.
With the 44-40 victory, the Cougars showed they can grind out close games through discipline and late-game composure which is something that could carry well beyond this non-conference matchup.
