The Kennedy Cougars were overwhelmed from the opening tip as the McClatchy Lions used size, speed, relentless pressure, and home court advantage to roll to a 126-45 varsity victory on Tuesday, January 6.
McClatchy wasted no time setting the tone after winning the tip as the Lions scored from the jump and never looked back. A monstrous dunk caused an early run that pushed the score to 15–2 and sent a clear message of their dominance. Kennedy struggled to respond as McClatchy’s athleticism ruled both ends of the floor.
Turnovers piled up for the Cougars, while the Lions capitalized with fast break dunks and a forceful block. By the end of the first quarter, McClatchy had already built a commanding 33–16 lead.
Any hope of a Kennedy response faded quickly in the second quarter. Disorganized offense and lackluster defensive rotations left the Cougars exposed, and McClatchy took full advantage. Three consecutive dunks during a crushing run deflated Kennedy and fueled the Lions’ bench and by halftime the score had ballooned to 64–28.
The second half brought more of the same energy. McClatchy consistently got to the rim, drawing fouls at will and making the best of nearly every opportunity. Meanwhile, Kennedy continued to settle for low-percentage shots, unable to establish any rhythm or sustained offense.
With the end in sight the fourth quarter was over before it began. McClatchy pushed the lead to 96–43 before closing out the night with a 126–45 final score.
Despite the lopsided result, Kennedy showed brief flashes of resilience. The Cougars shot well from the free-throw line and occasionally connected from beyond the arc, offering fleeting moments of optimism. However, any potential momentum was quickly shut down by McClatchy’s overwhelming pace and physicality.
The loss serves as a harsh reminder of the gap Kennedy must close, while McClatchy’s dominant performance highlighted a team firing on all cylinders.
