The culinary program has been working on new ways to bring fresh recipes to students, and the process behind it is more creative than you might think.
When interviewing seniors Leah Calderon and Shawn’Tre Davnis Espinoza from the culinary program, they explained how their recipes come together. “Ms. B, she has a cookbook full of recipes,” Leah said, adding that new ideas also come from multiple people pitching in. “By multiple people joining in and suggesting the recipes,” both agreed. To get even more inspiration, they use Google Forms, interview others for feedback, and set aside time to experiment together, making it a true team effort.
Culinary sells on “Tuesdays and Thursdays,” both said, noting that their stand is usually set up “by the lockers in front of C-Wing or in front of the library,” according to Leah. Shawntre added that “the prices are usually 2-4 dollars.”
The money raised goes directly back into the program. “To raise money for the culinary program, for their supplies, field trips, and other expenses,” Leah explained. Selling, funding, and experimenting keep the program going strong.
As for why they keep creating new dishes, Leah said, “To give a variety of foods and options for them to cook and eat.”
Both Leah and Shawntre also shared what the class means to them personally “It’s really fun, it feels great, it’s a way to express themselves, it’s a really social class as well.”
Each dish the program creates isn’t just about food. It’s about collaboration, imagination, and giving students a chance to bring something new to the table.
