Need a place to calm down? Maybe a place to look for support? Maybe you just need someone to talk to? The Student Support Center is open for all students, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday!
The Student Support Center is located next to the library in the C Wing here at JFK.
The Student Support Center is a safe space for all students to come in, should they need anything for their well-being, whether that be social or emotional.
Ms. Vakis shares their methods to the Clarion ensuring student support.
“We have one-on-one individual counseling that we offer,” Ms. Vakis said. “We also offer a variety of support groups… We offer mentoring as well. So let’s say the student wants to work on their grades or organization, some type of personal growth area, we can help students with that. We do a lot of crisis intervention.”
Busy as can be and ready to help its students, the Student Support Center has around 20 students coming in each day. According to Ms. Vakis, the head of the Student Support Center, they have various resources to provide to all those students in need from food, to healthcare and getting school materials and even getting hygiene supplies.
“We have the district that can send a food pack every week, but we also connect them to the food banks and the community,” Ms. Vakis assures. “Let’s say housing is an issue, somebody’s in foster housing, we can refer them to resources for that. Health insurance, some families or students don’t have medical insurance… A lot of supplies we offer for students include backpacks, folders, pencils, things like that… We also have hygiene supplies for students, like deodorant, shampoo conditioner for some of the families.”
So if you ever need a place to work alone, maybe a place for counseling, or maybe just need some help, the Student Support Center is open every school day from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM ready to help you.
