College applications have finally arrived and students are panicking, but don’t fret because the JFK counseling team is here to help you.
Starting on Oct 2 every Thursday during lunch, there will be college application workshops hosted at the College and Career Center located next to the Counseling Office. This will continue until Nov 20, providing students with ample time to seek assistance.
When you arrive, you can expect to have one of the staff members assist you with whatever you need college-related. Although the flyer says specifically college applications, a few students inside were also receiving help with their FAFSA accounts, and College & Career Counselor Ms. Prasad was happy to assist them in doing so.
“So pretty much every application season we try to host several different workshops and information sessions, letting different reps and universities come talk to students,” Prasad comments. “Kind of just letting them know what the opportunities are for them after high school.”
Workshops, much like this one, are in place to try and open new doors for students who might still be split about what they might want to do after high school. Of course this workshop is for help on applications, but while you are there, you can schedule an appointment with Ms. Prasad to get more specific help with whatever the student needs.
The Counseling Team has hosted multiple events like these for juniors and seniors alike for almost 3 years now. Don’t think setting up events like this is simple, though; many different things need to be considered.
As Ms. Prasad puts it, “There’s a lot of coordinating and facilitating the workshops… pretty much communicating with the different reps that want to visit our schools, seeing what’s a good day to have them visit out and then also advertising it to students… getting the students that sign up making passes for them, getting their attendance taken care of when they’re missing class to attend. So it’s a lot of, I would say, logistical work in the background to make all these events happen”.
As you can see, putting together events like this is no small feat, so next time you see Ms. Prasad, make sure to show her some appreciation.
